Set Styling

A set stylist designs the scene and layout of the shot and works hand-in-hand with the photographer from props shopping, positioning of props in the set in advance of the shoot and throughout the shoot. Stylists work with photographers for controlled, smaller shoots on light tables, small sets, on shelving, with a light box or within a light tent. Larger shoots incorporate an entire room, larger sets, indoor and outdoor sets and room sets. Depending on the look desired, set styling might include the choice of backgrounds—solid colors, patterns and white. Many clients choose white, or drop white as it is known, or green screen as the photo easily drops out of the background and into new backgrounds of multiple layouts for media and websites.

Set stylists also collaborate with the clients, makeup artists, art directors to make the “product” sizzle. To capture the attention of the viewer until they say “uncle” and make a purchase. They “dress” a set just like fashion stylists dress a model.

A set stylist designs the scene and works hand-in-hand with the photographer from the setup in advance of the shoot and through the shoot. A set stylist must be organized and understand the vision of the photographer and the ambiance required and through artistic interpretation, deliver the correct mood to garner the desired buyer response.

Dressing the set

Set stylists employ props appropriate for the layout. For an office shot, a real office may not be an option in which case a set designer builds the walls, etc. and furniture is rented along with desk props, water cooler, computers, clocks, copiers and a myriad of other complimenting items.
